We understand how difficult a decision to re-home your parrot can be. Situations in our lives can change whether we are prepared for them or not. Sometimes we find that we can no longer care for our pets the way we would like to. With the changes in our economy some of us find we can no longer afford their care, or have less time to spend interacting with them due to work commitments.
Please think before you put an advert out to sell your bird!
Who will it be going to?? Buyers of birds may come across as very caring and loving, but do you really know where they will end up? You may feel that putting an advert out for a “cheap” bird will find your beloved family pet a nice quick home but is this best in the long run? will they be going to a breeder, or going into an aviary, or be sold on again and again?

Although Birdline do not buy or sell birds, we do have a continuously growing base of members who can offer a caring and loving home for your bird. All our foster carers are extensively vetted and are subject to home checks and ongoing assessments. Our network of experienced Area Co-ordinators will be happy to help and advise you on re-homing your bird.
The first step is to contact us and express your interest in re-homing your bird. We will have a chat with you about what Birdline can offer your bird and answer any questions you have. We will then find out who your local Area Co-ordinator will be. The Area Co-ordinator will then contact you to discuss your bird and your situation. This does not commit you to anything.
If you are happy to continue, the Area Co-ordinator will then visit your home and chat with you further. The ACO (Area Co-ordinator) will have a Lifelong Care Agreement form for you to fill out together. This document allows us to collect as much information as possible about your bird so we may better understand its requirements for a future home.
Once you have signed the bird over to Birdline it will be taken to a Safe House where we can further assess its needs and habits. The Safe House phase is a very important step to enable us to better understand your bird, and what the ideal future forever home would be. Many birds will behave differently in an unfamiliar environment and the Safe House allows us to monitor its behaviour before we start looking for a foster home.
Once the Safe House is happy that the bird is ready to be re-homed, an assessment report is sent to the ACO Manager for consideration. If the ACO Manager is happy that the bird is ready, the bird is put onto our Re-homing List.
The Re-homing Team will then take over and start assessing the applications for the bird. They will take into account all applications and arrange to speak to the applicants one by one. This will allow them to narrow down the candidates to the most suitable homes. The final applicants will then have to undergo a Home Check. This is where an ACO will visit the applicant’s home and discuss their situation and experience. Their home will be checked for safety and their knowledge of the bird’s species verified. The ACO will then write a report to the ACO Manager and report their findings.
The Re-homing Team will then use their experience and knowledge of the bird to decide the best place for the bird to be fostered. Their aim is to find the home that is most suited to offer a happy, loving home for the rest of the bird’s life.
The fostered bird will always remain the property of Birdline. Although this sounds cold, it is done for a very good reason. If the foster home was to have an unexpected change in circumstance and could no longer care for the bird, then Birdline is able to bring the bird back into the system and search for another loving home. Because the bird legally belongs to Birdline, it can never be sold or passed on by our foster homes. We have complete control over the bird’s future happiness.
There are a lot of things to consider when looking for a home for your Parrot. Please don’t rush, make sure you have done your homework. You don’t want your pet going from home to home for the rest of his/her life.

Q: What birds do you take?
A: We take all parrots and parakeets, We never turn away a bird.
Q: Will my bird stay with you for life?
A: Your bird will stay under contract to Birdline UK Ltd Parrot Rescue for all its natural life, and will be placed with a suitable foster home who will be a vetted member of the charity.
Q: Do the birds get human interaction?
A: Yes all birds receive human interaction, the level they get depends on each individual bird’s needs.
Q: Who will I talk to when I donate my bird? Can we bring our bird to you?
A: When you ring our Help Line you will speak to a Senior Offical or Manager of the charity who will be more than happy to help you. If you decide to donate your parrot we will then put you in touch with the Area Co-ordinator closest to you. We will need to ask you questions about your bird so we have a good understanding the bird’s needs and background to help find their forever home.
Q: Can we keep in contact with our bird?
A: Yes. You may call us at any time for an update on your bird.
Q: Can we contribute towards the bird’s upkeep?
A: If you wish to contribute towards the care of the bird this will be very much appreciated. You could also become a member of Birdline UK Ltd Parrot Rescue for £25 a year. As we are a voluntary, self funded charity, all membership money goes towards the care of the birds in Birdline.
